Eighth, to the people who say this latest Vanity Fair interview if her breaking point, proving that she’s no longer “America’s Sweetheart”:
Well, what did you expect? Take a good listen to her song ‘The Lucky One’. No, it’s not about Zac Efron like you all tried to assume. It’s about an ‘anonymous’ celebrities’ struggle with living in the lime light. She is a gracious, humble woman who has never been anything but thankful for being blessed with the chance of living her dream of making music and performing it in front of large crowds and hearing them sing her own words back to her. But after all this picking and nagging and poking and joking and accusing and assuming and belittling, who can blame her for feeling tired? Of course she’s going to stand up for herself. After millions and millions of people saying she’s nothing but a whiny, attention seeking, pathetic, man-needing little child, I’m shocked she’s made it this long keeping her cool. Sure, she has her flaws. But who doesn’t? I do. You do. Everyone does. But do we really need to pick on an innocent young woman, just because she’s living her life free of needing to please people? Did you know she’s afraid of being seen by the paparazzi now? In an interview from Elle 2013, a reporter writes “Are you ready to see my ‘no emotion’ face?” she asks me, gesturing to the throngs of photographers waiting outside. The 10 paces we take from the door of the restaurant to Swift’s black SUV feel a bit like walking the plank. […] “I usually only make that face when I’m alone, or I put my head down.” Why? I ask. “So they don’t get a good shot.” She pauses and thinks about it. “I guess also because I’m scared.” She’s scared. She’s scared of what’s going to be said about her, just because she’s stepping out for coffee. She’s not attention seeking, she’s actually scared. And while we’re on the topic of publicity, no, she did not tell Tina Fey and Amy Pohler that they will “burn in hell”. She admits to being put off by their joke, but says she’s able to laugh at her self. She jokingly says she appreciates Katie Couric’s attempt of cheering her up. That’s it. And sense when does standing up for her music mean that she’s accusing everyone of being sexist? Her direct quote was “For a female to write about her feelings, and then be portrayed as some clingy, insane, desperate girlfriend in need of making you marry her and have kids with her, I think that’s taking something that potentially should be celebrated—a woman writing about her feelings in a confessional way—that’s taking it and turning it and twisting it into something that is frankly a little sexist.” She’s not calling you a sexist for not enjoying her music, she’s saying you’re leaning towards sexist feelings if you think that a woman wanting a deep love in her life with a man is “clingy and insane.”
Ninth, to the people who say she’s a little girl “stuck in her middle school years” and needs to grow up:
Look what happens when she tries. She tries to branch out into new music, she pursues men she hopes to settle down with, she matures her style with new hair and new clothes, she presents herself with dignity and grace in her interviews. And yet, all people can seem to do is focus on where she’s doing wrong. ‘Too many boyfriends’, or ‘trying too hard to be someone she’s not’, or ‘I can’t believe she thinks she can still be sweet and innocent in that dress’. If you want her to ‘grow up’ so badly, why can’t you let her? She’s 23 years old. Since when did that become the mandatory age to be wearing velvet jumps suits with a husband and a kid, ready to be done with the ‘childlike years’? Everyone wants her to stop being so man-dependent and focused on finding a man. So here she is, focusing on her career and doing good for other people and living her life in the most normal way possible and not needing a husband to provide for her, and once again she’s wrong. So if she just can’t win in your eyes, then why not let her just enjoy her life? She’s not hurting you, she’s not hurting our family, she’s not hurting anybody. So what if she is a little quirky, if she still presents herself as a humble, well mannered young woman, if she enjoys surrounding herself with many different types of people? If you can’t let her grow up, but you can’t let her stay young, then just leave her be. Is that too hard?
Tenth, to my fellow Swifties:
No matter what happens, don’t give up on our girl. No matter what the tabloids say, no matter what the critics say, no matter what anyone else says, don’t give up on her. We are the people that are keeping her strong. We are the ones who have to stand behind her when the rest of society has chosen to gang up on her. We are the ones she’ll be looking to in the end to remind her of why all this bullying and all this hate is worth it. Because we love her. So whenever you hear criticism, whenever you hear hate, whenever you hear anything bad being sad about her, make me this promise: rise above it. Think of how Taylor would handle it. Would she handle it with harsh words or mean things being said back to those people who have a different opinion that hers, no matter how harsh those opinions are? No. She would kill them with kindness. And until this society-wide gang up on Taylor is over, that’s what we have to do to. We have to remember the little curly haired, blue eyed girl from Pennsylvania who loves cats, and baking, and loving life with her friends, and her fans. And we have to continue to be those loyal fans she loves to love. Stand behind her. Tweet her her own lyrics when the media is being particularly rough. Tell her ‘I believe in whatever you do, and I’ll do anything to see it through.’ Remind her that we are the ones she should listen to, not the tabloids. We’re the ones who see her as charming and kind and strong and inspirational, and those are the things she should think about herself, not that other crap. Never leave her side, just like she has never left ours.
